Gratitude Changes Everything
Nov 08, 2025
Gratitude is one of those words that’s easy to overlook. In leadership, it can sound like a soft skill, something extra to fit in when there’s time. But gratitude is actually one of the most powerful disciplines a leader can build. It changes how you think, how you respond, and how you carry the work.
Research shows that when we intentionally reflect on what’s going well, the brain releases dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals improve focus, lower stress, and strengthen decision-making. Gratitude shifts the brain’s attention away from what’s missing and toward what’s meaningful. Over time, that creates clarity and steadiness in how we lead.
For school leaders, gratitude builds perspective. It helps you recognize progress and see growth that might otherwise go unnoticed.
When practiced regularly, gratitude shapes the way you lead. It builds self-awareness, helping you notice what drives your decisions and how your attitude affects others. Gratitude also encourages a healthier outlook, allowing you to stay present and lead with empathy and purpose. Far from being a simple “feel-good” practice, gratitude is a powerful and research-backed approach to leadership that strengthens both your mindset and your effectiveness.
As I reflect on this season, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Whether you’ve been part of this community for a while or just recently joined, I’m grateful you’re here. The work you do matters deeply, and your willingness to keep showing up for your schools and teams inspires me. I’m thankful to be connected with leaders who care so deeply about purpose, people, and growth.
