Darktober: Why October Hits Schools So Hard

Oct 03, 2026

You are six to eight weeks into the school year. Research says this is the exact point where educators hit a wall.

The startup energy is spent. Grading, behavior, family calls, evaluations, and data cycles are all peaking together. Thanksgiving is weeks away. Welcome to Darktober, and here is how to get your building over the wall.

What the Wall Is Telling You

Some call it the October slump or the Fall Wall. Darktober says it best. Here is the most important thing for a principal to understand: the wall is evidence that the demands of the work are outpacing the resources people have to meet them. Your staff's commitment is intact. Their tank is low.

Why October Feels So Hard

The first weeks of school take enormous energy. Teachers are getting to know students, building relationships, establishing procedures, and contacting families. Principals are doing all of that at the systems level: resolving staffing issues, responding to family concerns, supporting new staff, and trying to be visible in every corner of the building.

By October, that energy is spent. The tasks keep coming.

  • The work compounds. Grading piles up and meetings multiply. What felt manageable in week two feels relentless in week eight.
  • Student needs come into focus. Behavior patterns settle in, intervention plans begin, and the first difficult family conversations arrive.
  • The baseline is already high. In RAND's 2026 survey, 55 percent of teachers reported frequent job-related stress, compared with 34 percent of similar working adults. Burnout reached 57 percent.
  • The light is changing. Shorter days shift sleep and energy, so people have less in the tank when schools start to ask for more.

Coffee and Candy Are Kind. Time Is Better.

A snack cart, a dress-up day, a kind email, and a staff shout-out are all thoughtful and appreciated. When the core problem is overload, staff need protected planning time, clear priorities, and fewer tasks.

The question that makes the best impact: What can I remove, clarify, protect, or share so people can do their most important work well?

Five Moves for Principals

1. Acknowledge it. Try: "October can be a heavy point in the year. The startup energy has faded, and the demands have increased. If you are feeling stretched, you are in good company."

2. Ask what is creating drag. Send a short, anonymous climate check. What is taking the most time outside your core work right now? What is one task, meeting, or process we could simplify, pause, or remove? What would make the next two weeks more manageable? Then close the feedback loop. Tell staff what you heard, what changes now, and what has to wait. Trust grows when feedback leads to action.

3. Remove one thing. Before adding a request, initiative, or meeting, decide what comes off the plate. Shorten a meeting. Consolidate communications. Simplify a form. Delay a nonessential initiative. The volume of work may be fixed.

4. Protect time and autonomy. Guard planning periods. Limit interruptions. Keep meetings purposeful and brief. Be clear about the nonnegotiables and give teachers discretion in how they meet them.

5. Make progress visible. Share improvements in attendance, routines that are working, student progress, and problems a team solved. Celebrate specific actions and their impact.

Three Moves to Share With Your Staff

  • Shrink the horizon. Plan the next five school days. Choose one instructional priority, one relationship priority, and one recovery priority.
  • Finish before adding. Pick the overdue task creating the most background stress, give it a set block of time, and complete a good-enough version.
  • Ask for something specific. "Could you cover my duty Tuesday so I can finish progress reports?" gives them something to say yes to.

Darktober is predictable, which makes it preventable. Reduce unnecessary demands, protect time, strengthen connection, and remind your staff that the work is hard but they matter.

Climb the wall together, y'all.
