Overwhelmed? Why Delegation is Key for Principals Facing Burnout!

Oct 05, 2024
overwhelmed principal, delegate, burnout

Principals are at a breaking point, working 60-80 hours per week, handling everything from student behavior to administrative tasks. The stress of trying to manage every detail of a school can also result in serious health problems, as seen in cases where principals have been forced into early retirement due to conditions like high blood pressureā€‹.

I’ve seen firsthand how the demands of being a principal can feel endless—often stretching well beyond the school day and into early mornings or weekends. This workload is not sustainable. According to a 2021 report, 42% of principals leave the profession within just three yearsā€‹ (NASSP).

The constant pressure to manage every aspect of the school, from student behavior to administrative paperwork, creates burnout and threatens both our personal well-being and the stability of our schools. If we don't change the way we lead, we'll continue to see this dangerous cycle of burnout, and even worse, we'll lose incredible leaders who simply can’t keep up with the demands.

The reality is that many principals struggle to delegate due to various reasons, including fear of losing control or the belief that no one can do the job as well as they can. However, delegation is essential for sustainability in our roles. It allows us to share the workload and empower our staff. Start by identifying tasks that don’t require your direct involvement. For instance, you could delegate leading a committee, organizing a school event, or handling administrative duties to trusted teachers or support staff.

If your team is also feeling overwhelmed, consider reaching out to parents or community volunteers who can contribute. Even involving student leaders in school activities can lighten your load and foster a sense of responsibility and engagement. If you're unsure where to start, begin by making a list of your weekly tasks. Which of those can be done by others? Once you’ve identified areas to delegate, communicate your expectations clearly and offer support to those taking on new responsibilities. You’ll find that sharing the load not only lightens your burden but also creates a stronger, more cohesive leadership team. When principals delegate effectively, they free themselves to focus on improving instruction and school culture—while also protecting themselves from burnout. It’s time we change how we lead so we can sustain our impact for years to come.

While delegating isn't the ONLY solution to this problem, it IS a solution where I see principals struggling. Especially newer principals, who feel like they need to do everything to be seen as capable, confident, and qualified.

I'm advocating for change... every principal with a coach or mentor. More practical and tangible support for school leaders. Why school leaders and not teachers? Because when the leaders are supported and equipped, they can support their teachers better. Then students win. Parents win. Communities win.

You don't have to do this alone. Many schools and districts will pay for mentorship and coaching programs. Reach out for support!
