Who's Checking In On The Principals?

In many districts, principals are tasked with leading schools, managing staff, addressing student behavior, and navigating parent concerns—all while trying to maintain a positive school culture. While some districts provide mentors and coaches, many principals are left without the guidance they need to thrive. Superintendents may offer support, but often, principals are thrown into the role without the ongoing training or mentorship required for success. As a result, they can feel isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure of where to turn for help.

The need for principal support is clear. Research shows that nearly 50% of principals leave their roles within the first three years due to burnout and lack of support. According to a 2020 study by the Learning Policy Institute, over 25% of principals cite inadequate preparation as a major factor in their decision to leave. When principals are given the necessary resources, mentoring, and coaching, they are more likely to stay in the role and positively impact student achievement and school culture.

To change this, we need a system in place where every new principal is assigned a coach or mentor for their first three years. A dedicated mentor can offer guidance, help navigate challenges, and provide the support necessary to excel in the role. By ensuring every principal receives this support, we can help create confident, effective leaders who are better equipped to foster thriving schools.
